Do you love bread as much as we do? This tour is the opposite of “Gluten-Free.” This one is for all the “Gluten-Lovers” out there! On our approximately 2 hour tasting tour we will walk to 5 or 6 different locations in Portland’s Downtown and Pearl District neighborhoods: a French bakery, an Italian Pasta restaurant for fresh, handmade pasta, an Israeli street food restaurant, an Italian pizza restaurant, a Romanian bakery, and a New Orleans style Donut shop.

This tour follows the history of bread from ancient Egypt to modern times. You’ll learn how gluten captivated our species and helped to shape history!

One of the highlights of this tour is seeing the pasta and pizza get made right in front of you! Some of the bakers have agreed to let us check out some of their dough so we can get a sense for the consistency of these breads and pastries before they are baked.

Book your ticket and join us for this exploration of Portland’s best Pizza, Pasta, Donuts, Croissants, Bagels, and fresh-out-the-fryer Beignets!

  • Handmade Pasta alla Carbonara
Watch the pasta get made right in front of you! We’ll try different shapes. Could be radiatorre, rigatone, or tagliatelle.
  • Authentic Pizza Margherita
We’ll watch the pizza makers toss the dough and then slide our pizza into a traditional italian woodfired oven that was imported from Italy. Best. Pizza. Ever.
  • Fresh-Out-The-Oven Pita
This ancient recipe comes out fluffy and hot, just perfect for dipping in some artisan hummus or olive oil with garlic and herbs. This is the Israeli version of a bread that is beloved by many parts of the Middle East and eastern mediterranean.
  • French Rustic Rolls
Made by an award winning French baker who moved to Portland, find out why the simplest of bread can be so complex and stunning. We’ll have a little butter on our rolls. Well-made bread with butter– one of life’s greatest pleasures…
  • Rose Croissant
You read that right. A pink croissant made by a master baker. His homage to Portland, the City of Roses. Made with rose water, you’ve never tried anything quite like this. Taste Portland Tours has to reserve them for our tour at 8am because they sell out quick!
  • Super Buttery Biscuit
Wow. Just… wow. This baker takes it back to the American South for a testament to what a Biscuit can be. Served with a little honey butter, we promise that you’ve never tried a better Biscuit.
  • Lemon Poppyseed Croughnuts (a Croissant Dough Donut)
The delicacy of this donut will astound you- the layered dough takes several days to make. Fried to perfection and topped off with a tangy lemon glaze that will tickle your tastebuds.
  • Garlic and Thyme Bagel
Toasted and slathered with a one-of-a-kind housemade pineapple and jalapeno cream cheese spread.
  • Chouquette
These French Donut holes are made of eclair batter, fried, and then sprinkled with some coarse rock sugar. Little bites of heaven…
  • Fresh-Out-The-Fryer Beignets
Straight from New Orleans to Portland, these traditional beignets are so simple, but soooo good, with a pile of powdered sugar on top and still hot cause they just came out the fryer. You really can’t leave this world without having tried a beignet fresh out the fryer…
